As the tide retreats, come with us to discover Ireland’s marine life that live under the waves on some of the most beautiful beaches in Connemara !
Discover the enchanting world of seaweeds and the marine life they support through our guided seashore activities. Immerse yourself in the marine world and learn sustainable seaweed foraging techniques. Join us to create beautiful sea-art sunprints and connect with nature in a peaceful setting.
Each tour starts on the lowest tide to maximise your time exploring the shore. These times will be different every day and the tour starts promptly at the advertised time as time and tide wait for no-one!
Please reach us at contact@irishseaweed.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We like to visit a number of different beaches throughout the summer - this changes day to day. The name of the beach and a map link to the exact location can be found at time of booking. Our favourite beaches include Dog's Bay near Roundstone, Selerna beach near Cleggan, Coral Strand near Ballyconneely. Get in touch if you want to organise a tour on your favourite beach!
Please wear clothes and footwear you feel comfortable in, but bear in mind that they might get wet when sitting/kneeling on rocks/sand. Layers of clothing are best as it can often be cool with shore breezes or rain showers. A rain jacket is always advised in Connemara - even in the summer! Wear sturdy shoes or boots suitable for walking and climbing on uneven or slippery surfaces. Examples include wellington boots, walking or trekking sandals, boots or shoes. Flip flops and lightweight trainers are not suitable.
A small bag or rucksack containing a bottle of water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, spare clothes is useful.
The tour content is aimed at adults of all ages, but it can be adapted for children if they are on the tour too.
People with limited mobility are more than welcome to contact us before booking the tour. We recommend remaining on the sandy beach if you are unsteady on your feet or need other supports (e.g. wheelchair users). We will run part of the tour from this spot, and bring samples of seaweeds and marine creatures to you in trays to avoid slipping on rocks.
Each tour location starts at one of Connemara’s beautiful public beaches. Amenities at the beach will include a car park, but may or may not include public toilets, hand-washing facilities or coffee spots etc. However, each beach is located within a few kilometres of villages such as Roundstone, Cleggan, Ballyconeelly or the town of Clifden where all of the above is available.
Cancellations are fully refundable up to 3 days before the tour starts. 50% of costs will be refunded up to 24 hours before the tour starts and no refund for cancellation less than 24 hours before the tour. No-shows on the day will receive no refunds unless the weather at the beach has been too poor to allow the tour to go ahead.
The summer weather can often be wet and windy in Connemara but it often passes by quickly. Therefore tours will take place in all reasonable weather conditions, with the exception of periods where Met Éireann (Ireland’s weather service) has issued a serious weather warning. This will be assessed 24 hours before the tour starts and any cancellations due to poor weather will be fully refunded or re-scheduled, depending on your preference.
Service dogs are more than welcome. Out of respect for other participants on the tour, pet dogs are not allowed on the tour, unless the tour has been fully booked by a family or friends group. In this case the dog must be well-behaved, on a lead (beaches are surrounded by farms) and supervised at all times.
